PIERRE, S.D. (AP) - A former South Dakota county prosecutor has pleaded not guilty to six counts of first-degree rape.

Former Walworth County State’s Attorney Christopher Jansen entered his plea this week in Pierre.

KCCR-AM reports Jansen also pleaded not guilty to one count each of sexual exploitation of a child and distribution of material involving the sexual exploitation of minors in August.

Jansen’s attorney Joan Powell asked for a continuance because of the complications arising from Jansen’s federal charges. Judge John Brown denied the request.

Jansen will appear in court for the state charges again on Nov. 12. He faces a maximum sentence of life in prison for each charge and a mandatory minimum of 15 years.

No trial for the federal charges has been set.

Jansen remains in the Hughes County Jail.
