GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) - North Carolina U.S. Sen. Kay Hagan has pushed back hard on Republican rival Thom Tillis for a commercial he’s running that features a veteran who says Hagan failed to get President Barack Obama to respond to the Islamic State threat sooner.

Hagan’s new TV ad beginning Wednesday has the first-term senator talking directly into the camera.

She says Tillis “should be ashamed” of his ad, in which retired Air Force officer Nancy Anderson says we cannot let service members who fought overseas “die in vain.” Anderson has a son serving in Afghanistan.

Hagan said the message that she doesn’t care is outrageous. She points out her husband is a veteran and she has two nephews on active duty. Hagan says she’s been “clear and decisive” on destroying the Islamic State.
