PHILADELPHIA (AP) - A Philadelphia man is being ordered to stand trial for first-degree murder after he was charged with killing and dismembering a transgender prostitute.

Judge David Shuter ruled Wednesday after a preliminary hearing for Charles Sargent.

The Philadelphia Inquirer reports (https://bit.ly/1sctvOd ) that defense lawyer J. Michael Farrell suggests Sargent may not be mentally competent for trial.

Sargent spoke loudly during the hearing and glared at the witnesses.

In a statement to detectives, Sargent said he acted in self-defense after he discovered Mark Diamond Williams was a man and he ordered him to leave his home.

He says Williams refused to leave without being paid $40 and that he stabbed Williams with a screwdriver during an ensuing struggle. Sargent allegedly then cut up Williams’ body and dumped it in an overgrown lot about a mile away.
