COVINGTON, La. (AP) - A St. Tammany Parish grand jury has indicted the mayor and town clerk of Pearl River.

Mayor James Lavigne was charged Wednesday with four counts of malfeasance in office, two counts of unauthorized use of a movable and one count of theft between $500 and $1,500.

Town clerk Diane Bennett Hollie is charged with one count of malfeasance, two of unauthorized use of a movable, one of theft over $1,500.

A legislative audit released in May accused them of making personal purchases with public money between 2011 and 2013. At the time, the six-term mayor called the audit report a political attack.

He told both NOLA.com/The Times-Picayune (https://bit.ly/1o0456P ) and The New Orleans Advocate (https://bit.ly/1vPdA7I ) on Wednesday that he did not know about the indictment.
