PITTSBURGH (AP) - A 17-year-old Pittsburgh boy was fatally shot as he was leaving home with his mother to go to school.

The Pittsburgh Public School district said the boy is Eric Young, a senior. The shooting was reported about 7:15 a.m. Wednesday in the city’s Hill District, and a schools spokeswoman says it is the second time in three weeks that shots had been fired at Young.

Homicide detectives were investigating.

Police say Young was shot several times. Public safety spokeswoman Sonya Toler says two black males wearing dark-hooded sweatshirts fired the shots.

The district says Young was new to the school this year and was “described by staff as a student who was popular with his peers and always had a smile on his face.”

Young’s school was dismissed for the day.
