CENTRAL ISLIP, N.Y. (AP) - A suburban New York physician has surrendered to federal authorities on charges of illegally distributing the painkiller oxycodone.

Michael Belfiore of Merrick made an initial appearance Wednesday in U.S. District Court in Central Islip.

Newsday (https://nwsdy.li/1vOZBPl ) reports Belfiore was released on $500,000 bond. He was not required to enter a plea.

Attorney Marc Gann declined to comment on the charges until he has read the court documents. He called Belfiore a caring doctor.

Prosecutors say Belfiore issued six prescriptions to an undercover police officer for oxycodone without a legitimate purpose. The undercover officer allegedly paid Belfiore thousands of dollars.

He faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted.

Belfiore is the eighth doctor arrested for allegedly illegally prescribing oxycodone on Long Island since 2011.
