ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) - Alaska State Troopers took a chartered flight to Shageluk on Wednesday to investigate the deaths of two people - a move that village and tribal members said was slow in coming.

Troopers arrived at the village of 83 people about 350 miles west of Anchorage about noon on Wednesday, agency spokeswoman Megan Peters said. She could not immediately confirm media reports that two people had been killed and village residents detained a suspect overnight until they arrived.

Troopers were first alerted late Tuesday evening that there were two injured people it the village. Two troopers arranged to ride with a medevac flight from Bethel to the scene. However, village residents later reported both people had died, and troopers say the hospital canceled the medevac flight.

No other transportation to Shageluk was available until troopers based in Anvik took a chartered flight Wednesday.

Shageluk, an Ingalik Indian village located about 20 miles east of Anvik, has no police presence or medical practitioner.

A joint release from the Shageluk City Council and the Shageluk Native Tribe said the community was “extremely outraged” by the delayed response by troopers, KTUU reported (https://is.gd/7LI78x).

“Untrained Shageluk good Samaritans were the first on scene to provide medical assistance and later, apprehend the suspect,” Shageluk officials wrote.

“After repeated attempts to seek law enforcement assistance to locate and apprehend (him), as well as provide medical care, troopers and medical officials have not arrived in Shageluk (as of 10:30 a.m. Wednesday),” they said in the release, sent about 90 minutes before troopers arrived

Calls both the village office and the tribal office weren’t answered Wednesday afternoon, and messages to The Associated Press were not immediately returned.
