LAS VEGAS (AP) - The Clark County District Attorney’s Office has ruled that Las Vegas police were justified in fatally shooting a 26-year-old man in December.

District Attorney Steve Wolfson said officers faced a real threat when they encountered Patrick Heki. Wolfson said Heki was “long-troubled” person and called his death a tragedy.

Police said Heki had tried to commit suicide in January 2012, and made threatening and suicidal statements at his parents’ home early on Dec. 7, 2013. Dispatchers said he talked of a killing spree and fired shots before emerging from the apartment.

Police said they ordered Heki to put down his gun, but he pointed it at them and they shot back. He died shortly after.

A public fact-finding review on the incident was held July 11.
