ROMEO, Mich. (AP) - A man charged with killing a 14-year-old girl as she walked her dog in southeastern Michigan has been ordered held without bond.

James VanCallis was arraigned Thursday in Romeo District Court on murder and other charges. A not guilty plea was entered on behalf of the 32-year-old from St. Clair County.

April Millsap’s body was found in July near Macomb Orchard Trail in Armada, about 50 miles northeast of Detroit. Prosecutors say there’s physical, eyewitness and electronic evidence that places VanCallis at the scene.

Defense attorney Dean Ankouny had sought release on bond. He says VanCallis maintains his innocence.

Armada Police Chief Howard Smith says VanCallis used a motorcycle helmet to subdue April. She died of head trauma and asphyxia. The next court hearing was set for Nov. 13.
