CHICAGO (AP) - Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel has wished the president of the Chicago Teachers Union a speedy recovery.

His office released a brief statement about Karen Lewis Thursday afternoon.

Earlier, CTU vice president Jesse Sharkey told a news conference that Lewis has “a serious illness.” But he added she’s “alert and comfortable” in hospital.

Emanuel says in the statement that Lewis is in his prayers and that he hopes “to see her on her feet very soon.”

Lewis tangled with Emanuel during a 2012 teacher strike. She’s circulating petitions for a possible challenge of the mayor next year. Lewis hasn’t yet said if she’ll run.

The mayor’s statement calls Lewis a “passionate advocate for her beliefs” who has “always been willing to speak up for her view of what’s best.”
