PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Former GOP congressional challenger Brendan Doherty has endorsed Democratic gubernatorial nominee Gina Raimondo.

Doherty, who ran unsuccessfully against U.S. Rep. David Cicilline in 2012 in the 1st District, said Thursday the treasurer is the best candidate to help Rhode Island’s struggling economy. Cranston Mayor Allan Fung is the Republican nominee.

WPRI-TV reports Doherty is no longer a registered Republican, according to the secretary of state’s office.

The former state police superintendent says “I don’t care too much about party labels” and that results matter most. He says Raimondo has the right ideas and tenacity to improve the economy.

She is promoting a plan to make the state a manufacturing hub again. She also wants to invest more in tourism, workforce development and infrastructure.

Fung has a $200 million tax-cut plan.
