COLUMBUS, Miss. (AP) - The Columbus City Council has transferred a firefighter to the police department after he married a co-worker’s niece.

Fire Chief Martin Andrews says firefighter Jonathan Goodman cannot work in the same department as his wife’s uncle.

Andrews tells The Commercial Dispatch (https://bit.ly/1t32Sxf ) Goodman made the choice to get married which violated the nepotism policy.

The city council offered Goodman the transfer Tuesday night’s meeting.

Goodman had been employed with fire department since April 2013.

Council members say they were sympathetic to Goodman’s position but the nepotism ordinance had to be enforced.
