BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) - A registered sex offender who pleaded guilty to selling methamphetamine to an undercover officer has been sentenced to five years in prison.

The Billings Gazette reports (https://bit.ly/1o21F7K ) District Judge Susan Watters reluctantly followed the terms of a plea agreement Thursday in sentencing 73-year-old Thomas Edmond Van Haele. She said five years in prison followed by five years of supervised release should be enough to protect the community.

She said she also took into consideration his age and medical problems.

Van Haele pleaded guilty in June to two counts of distributing meth for the May 2012 sales.

His criminal record includes a 1982 drug conviction and two sex offenses involving a girl in 1992. He was required to register as a Level 3 sex offender, one who is considered at high risk to reoffend.
