MEDFORD, Ore. (AP) - A psychotic man who was using methamphetamine when he carjacked a van last August in Medford was sentenced Wednesday to up to 20 year at the Oregon State Hospital.

A Jackson County Circuit Court judge gave 26-year-old Christopher Cody Willard the maximum period under the care of the Psychiatric Security Review Board.

The Mail Tribune reports (https://is.gd/4O7H90 ) the Medford man was found guilty of first-degree robbery but insane.

Police say he took the van at knifepoint in a struggle with the 82-year-old driver who suffered a broken foot. Willard was arrested after a chase and standoff and finally taken into custody with the use of a Taser.

A psychiatric expert said Willard was not taking his medications for his psychotic disorder and was using methamphetamine that amplified his hallucinations.
