ATLANTA (AP) - Former President Jimmy Carter will be hitting the campaign trail this weekend in support of his grandson, Jason, who’s waging a strong challenge to Republican Gov. Nathan Deal.

The former president will be appearing with Democrat Jason Carter at a church in Albany on Sunday morning, a day before early voting begins in Georgia. It’s the elder Carter’s first public appearance on the campaign trail this year with just over three weeks to go before the Nov. 4 election.

Polls suggest a close race between Deal and Carter, and Democrats are making a big push this year in both the governor’s race and a fierce battle for Georgia’s open Senate seat. The former president’s role previously had been limited to headlining fundraisers and providing counsel to the campaign.
