BAY ST. LOUIS, Miss. (AP) - A 39-year-old Kiln woman who fatally shot her boyfriend with an assault rifle while he was in bed in 2012 has been sentenced to 40 years in prison.

The Sun Herald reports (https://bit.ly/1BVBgsI ) Judge Larry Bourgeois sentenced Virginia M. Hill on a guilty plea to second-degree murder Monday in Hancock County Circuit Court.

Hill admitted killing 34-year-old Dustin Jarrell at the home they shared.

Bourgeois gave her the maximum penalty under a fairly new sentencing law and suspended 15 years, leaving 25 years to serve, followed by five years of probation. He also ordered she pay for Jarrell’s burial costs.

Hill has been in custody since her arrest.
