ELIZABETH, N.J. (AP) - A 38-year-old northern New Jersey man has been convicted of brutally attacking a Plainfield police officer in 2012.

Andre Henderson was convicted after a three-week trial of punching Officer Israel Valentin in the head, knocking him to the ground and then kicking him and stomping on his head.

A man driving by stopped the attack by striking Henderson with his daughter’s softball bat and Henderson was then arrested by other officers.

Henderson faces up to 20 years in state prison after he was convicted of second-degree aggravated assault.

Valentin suffered five broken ribs and a brain bleed and spent several days in the hospital. He returned to duty and remains on the force.
