RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - State health officials say a child has died from complications from the flu, the first death of the 2014-15 season.

The N.C. Department of Health and Human Services reported Thursday that an elementary school-aged child in the Triangle region died last week. The department said the child was at risk for complications from the flu because of underlying medical conditions.

Officials said the child’s hometown, county, age and sex are not being released.

State Health Director Dr. Robin Cummings said officials hope making people aware of the death will help remind everyone that it is not too early to be vaccinated.
