OSHKOSH, Wis. (AP) - Oshkosh Corp. says it plans to cut more than 300 jobs in its defense division.

The defense contractor says the layoffs include 250 to 300 hourly positions and 70 salaried positions in Oshkosh.

Executive Vice President John Urias cites “significantly lower U.S. defense spending and dramatic reductions in military vehicle production.”

Urias says in a statement that Oshkosh Corp. has gone to “great lengths” to reduce the impact and is “aggressively competing for future contracts.”

The announcement says many cuts will come from temporary employees, eliminating open positions and employees retiring.

The company says it’ll work with local and state agencies to help the laid-off employees find new jobs.

With the layoffs, Oshkosh says it will retain more than 1,800 defense employees in Oshkosh and elsewhere around the world.
