HOUSTON (AP) - Police say a would-be burglar escaped empty-handed after hiding for nearly two hours in a Houston dollar store.

Sgt. J.B. Haney tells KHOU-TV (https://bit.ly/10SNaIP ) the attempted theft took place at a Family Dollar on Tuesday night. They say two men entered the store while it was open. Security footage shows one man climbed onto a shelf and the other man stacked boxes to conceal him before leaving.

Police believe the men used walkie-talkies to keep in touch.

The man crawled out of his hiding spot once employees had left and triggered a motion-sensor alarm. He ran out the back door.

Haney says it’s “mind boggling” that the suspect didn’t grab anything on the way out after sacrificing so much time.

Police are investigating.
