PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - General Treasurer Gina Raimondo says Rhode Island has recouped nearly $600,000 in overpayments identified in the state’s disability pension system.

Raimondo told the state retirement board on Wednesday that an outside audit and efforts to improve compliance resulted in the identification of more than $1 million in overpayments since 2000 to 16 retirees receiving disability pensions.

Her office says the retirees had earned income in excess of what is allowed by law. The money the retirees owed to the pension trust is being recouped through the suspension of pension payments.

Raimondo initiated the audit in 2011 shortly after taking office.

Raimondo is the Democratic nominee for governor. Her Republican opponent on Nov. 4 is Cranston Mayor Allan Fung.
