HAHNVILLE, La. (AP) - The Louisiana Supreme Court has appointed a retired judge from New Iberia to hear the case of a Destrehan High School teacher accused of having sex with a 16-year-old student at her home in Montz and in Jefferson Parish with another teacher.

NOLA.com/The Times-Picayune reports (https://bit.ly/1ycM0FS) the high court Wednesday tapped Anne Lennan Simon of the 16th Judicial District, which covers Iberia, St. Mary and St. Martin parishes, to oversee Shelley Dufresne’s case.

Dufresne, 32, is the daughter of Emile St. Pierre, a judge for St. Charles Parish’s 29th Judicial District. St. Pierre and the district’s two other judges - Lauren Lemmon and Michele Morel - stepped away from the case, citing that relationship.

Dufresne is scheduled to appear Oct. 23 before Simon.

District Attorney Joel Chaisson II said in a letter to Morel, when the case was temporarily allotted to her court, that he expects to file charges against Dufresne. And he said the sheriff’s office is investigating potentially more charges. “Although the screening process is not yet complete, it is anticipated that charges will be filed in this case,” Chaisson wrote.

Dufresne was booked with carnal knowledge of a juvenile at home in Montz, where she lives. Authorities have not specified the date of the crime, beyond saying it happened in September, or whether it happened at Dufresne’s house.

Separately, Dufresne and another English teacher from Destrehan High, Rachel Respess, 24, are accused of engaging in group sex with the teenage boy at Respess’ apartment in Kenner on Sept. 12, Dufresne’s birthday. The student, now 17, has told investigators he consented.

In Kenner, each teacher faces charges of carnal knowledge of a juvenile, indecent behavior with a juvenile and contributing to the delinquency of a juvenile. The joint case in Jefferson Parish has not yet been assigned.

Both teachers are free on bond.
