LA GRANGE, N.Y. (AP) - A bridge that’s part of a Hudson Valley bicycling and walking trail is being named in honor of a sheriff’s deputy on the 22nd anniversary of his death in an on-duty accident.

The Dutchess County Rail Trail bridge over Titusville Road in the town of La Grange is being named for Deputy Erik Renninger during a ceremony being held late Thursday morning at the bridge.

Renninger responded to a report of a vehicle leaking gas on Route 9G in the town of Rhinebeck on the morning of Oct. 1992. As he crossed the road on foot to assist the motorist, Renninger was hit by a passing vehicle.

He died about 12 hours later at Albany Medical Center. Renninger was the last Dutchess County sheriff’s deputy to die in the line of duty.
