ATLANTA (AP) - Georgia’s state parks plan to offer free admission, volunteer projects and family friendly events on “Your State Parks Day.”

The event on Sept. 27 is the state’s celebration of National Public Lands Day. It aims to highlight the ways parks enrich communities and the importance of volunteering locally. More than 60 locations are set to participate.

The event is sponsored by Friends of Georgia State Parks and Historic Sites, which is dedicated to preserving and enhancing the state’s natural resources. To encourage participation, the nonprofit plans to waive the $5 parking fee and historic site admission fees for all visitors.

Director of state parks Becky Kelley says volunteers are needed to help with landscaping, maintenance and junior ranger programs for children.
