NEWBURGH, N.Y. (AP) - Members of a New York Air National Guard unit based in the Hudson Valley are preparing to head to Africa to participate in the continent’s largest air show and defense exhibit.

The 105th Airlift Wing at Stewart Air National Guard Base in Newburgh is sending a C-17 Globemaster III cargo plane to South Africa this weekend.

The plane will carry a New York Army National Guard RQ-7 “Shadow” unmanned aircraft and 13 members of the Army’s Golden Knights Parachute Team. They’ll be heading to the African Aerospace and Defense 2014 trade and air show being held next week at an air base outside Pretoria.

The New York National Guard has a partnership program with the South African National Defense Force.

The 105th Airlift Wing operates eight C-17s, one of the largest planes in the world.
