CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police have arrested a man after they say he sexually assaulted a woman and stole her car.

A statement from police said a woman told officers that she had been physically and sexually assaulted by an armed suspect in her home. She said the man took her car and other personal items.

Police officers found the vehicle near Statesville Avenue and Interstate 85, and when they tried to stop the driver, he refused and led officers on a chase. Officers used tire deflation devices to stop the car.

Authorities say 24-year-old Derek Antonio Smith faces multiple charges, including first-degree rape and larceny of a motor vehicle.

Smith is being held in the Mecklenburg County jail under $299,000 bond. Jail records didn’t indicate whether he had an attorney.
