NEW YORK (AP) - People in New York City are among the volunteers around the nation participating in a 9/11 Day of Service.

The locations include the Nathan Straus public school on the Lower East Side of Manhattan.

A growing number of its students live in homeless shelters.

Organizers say the teachers there work to foster a sense of closeness and productivity.

The volunteers were painting, organizing and lending a hand in other ways.
