WAPWALLOPEN, Pa. (AP) - Authorities say an elderly man died after he was badly burned in a garage fire in his northeastern Pennsylvania home.

Officials in Luzerne County said the blaze at the Conyngham Township home was reported shortly after 3 p.m. Wednesday.

Firefighters said 80-year-old Edward Strzelecki of Wapwallopen was working in the garage when the blaze broke out.

The Lehigh County coroner’s office said he died Wednesday night due to injuries from the blaze.

Lehigh Valley medic Jeff Kosalko said he saw the fire and tried to enter the structure but was unable to do so because of the heat and smoke.

The victim’s cousin, fire department tanker driver Joe Kubricki, said Strzelecki had apparently been siphoning gasoline from the tractor while working on a riding mower “and something apparently ignited.”
