DECATUR, Ga. (AP) - DeKalb County prosecutors say a Stone Mountain woman has been sentenced to life in prison in the death of her 3-year-old daughter.

District Attorney’s spokesman Erik Burton says Meriel Bemis pleaded guilty Thursday and was sentenced by Superior Court Judge Gregory A. Adams.

Authorities have said Bemis suffocated her daughter, Lela Bemis, after she and her boyfriend broke up in late February.

Prosecutors say after Bemis’ boyfriend left the woman’s apartment, she told him that she had killed her daughter. Authorities say the man returned to the apartment, found the girl and tried administering CPR to no avail.

Authorities say the girl was pronounced dead at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston.
