AUGUSTA, Ga. (AP) - Authorities in eastern Georgia say a 12-year-old girl who fell into a canal has died.

Richmond County Coroner Jordan Harkins tells the Augusta Chronicle (https://bit.ly/1rPmz5m ) the girl fell into the Augusta Canal Wednesday night and was pronounced dead Thursday morning at Georgia Regents Medical Center.

Emergency responders have said the girl fell into the canal and became trapped. Witnesses told investigators that the girl was playing near the canal when she fell in.

The girl’s identity hasn’t been released.
