JERSEY CITY, N.J. — More than two dozen children and two adults have been treated at a hospital after accidentally drinking a mixture of bleach and water at a New Jersey day care center.

The incident happened at the Growing Tree Learning Center II in Jersey City at about 11 a .m. Thursday.

The Jersey City Fire Department told WABC-TV a substitute teacher’s aide was giving students water when she mistakenly used a bottle that had water and a little bleach in it.

A spokesman for Jersey City Medical Center-Barnabas Health says 28 3- and 4-year-olds and two adults were treated and released by 3 p.m.

Spokesman Mark Rabson says most complained of lightheadedness, mild nausea and stomach aches.

The state Department of Children and Families, which licenses the day care center, is investigating.
