WAYNESVILLE, N.C. (AP) - Animal control officials in Haywood County are taking care of seven newborn puppies after they were found tied up in a pillowcase and left on the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Area media outlets report the puppies appeared to be two days old when they were found Sept. 5. Leyah Pilkington, assistant director of the Haywood County Animal Shelter, took the puppies into her own home to keep them warm, dry and fed until they were taken to Sarge’s Animal Rescue Foundation.

Board president Steve Hewitt says the foundation has established the Parkway Puppy Fund, which is accepting donations to help pay for the care of the puppies and all of Sarge’s animals in need. Hewitt also said the staff is concerned about the mother and hope she is OK.
