PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Gov. Lincoln Chafee will host the prime minister of Ireland during a visit to Rhode Island that will include a stop at the Irish Famine Memorial in Providence.

Chafee’s office announced Thursday that he will host Enda Kenny and other Irish officials on Sept. 24. Kenny is expected to attend a reception at the Statehouse in addition to visiting the famine memorial.

The Democratic governor met with the prime minister in Ireland earlier this year as part of a trade mission. His office says the two countries are exploring business and tourism opportunities.

The governor says Rhode Island must “look beyond our borders to the international community to remain competitive with our neighboring states.”
