TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) - A man is accused of child abuse in the death of his girlfriend’s infant son in Tempe.

Tempe police say 39-year-old Robert Reynolds is being held on suspicion of three counts of child abuse.

It was immediately clear Thursday if Reynolds has a lawyer yet.

Authorities responded to a 911 call Sunday of a 14-month-old child not breathing at a Tempe home.

Paramedics began treating the child and transported him to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Police say the toddler had obvious signs of trauma to his head and body, including a fractured arm.

Detectives say the boy’s mother went to work and left her son with Reynolds and his two young children.

They say Reynolds initially told his girlfriend that the boy fell and hit his head.
