KYLE, Texas (AP) - State troopers have fired on an 18-wheeler that drove through a South Texas Border Patrol checkpoint to bring the rig to a stop following a chase covering more than 160 miles.

Authorities say the chase began early Thursday when the driver of the rig failed to stop at the checkpoint in Freer, northeast of Laredo.

The pursuit drew troopers, Border Patrol agents and other law enforcement personnel as it moved north. Officials say the driver on several occasions attempted to strike pursuing vehicles.

Shots were fired into the wheels of the rig to finally bring it to a stop in Kyle, northeast of San Antonio. Nine people were found in the trailer and they were taken into custody by Border Patrol.

The unidentified driver of the rig was arrested.
