POPLARVILLE, Miss. (AP) - A former police officer already awaiting trial for sexually assaulting a minor in Lamar County has been indicted on two counts of attempted capital murder by a Pearl River County grand jury.

District Attorney Hal Kittrell tells The Hattiesburg American (https://hatne.ws/1sz6dSx ) Averal Burnett is scheduled to appear Sept. 23 in Poplarville for arraignment on the new indictments.

Kittrell says the two cases are connected.

Burnett was arraigned last week on the charges in Lamar County.

According to the Pearl River County indictment, Burnett tried to orchestrate a murder-for-hire scheme from his jail cell.

The indictment alleges Burnett offered his former cellmate money to bond out and kill two people who were connected to the Lamar County charges.

It was unclear whether Burnett has an attorney.
