FORT WAYNE, Ind. (AP) - Three people were taken to a hospital after firefighters rescued them from a smoke-filled apartment house in Fort Wayne.

Firefighters were called to the blaze about 2 a.m. Friday at a house just north of the city’s downtown that had been split into several apartments.

Fire Department spokeswoman Stacey Fleming tells WANE-TV firefighters found a woman unconscious in a downstairs apartment and guided another person outside. Crews used a ladder to help a man down from a porch roof.

The unconscious woman was taken to a hospital in critical condition, while the others were in fair condition.

The Journal Gazette reports the blaze under control within 15 minutes and the fire’s cause was under investigation.
