COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - The two candidates to be South Carolina’s next lieutenant governor have agreed to participate in a debate hosted by South Carolina Educational Television.

The campaigns of former two-term Attorney General Henry McMaster and state Rep. Bakari Sellers said Friday the two will debate Oct. 16.

McMaster won a four-way Republican primary in June. The 67-year-old is a former state GOP chairman.

Sellers had no primary contest. The 29-year-old has represented rural Denmark for four terms.

Both candidates say they welcome a chance to show how they contrast.

Last week, Sellers called on McMaster to renounce his membership in a historically all-white country club he’s belonged to for 30 years. McMaster said the club has no racial discrimination policies, and he wouldn’t be a member if it did.
