OELWEIN, Iowa (AP) - Vandals have damaged more than 70 gravestones at a cemetery in northeast Iowa, authorities said.

Police in Oelwein (OHL’-weyen) said 38 gravestones were cracked or broken at the Oakdale Cemetery, which sits on the southwest side of the Fayette County community.

The bodies of many of the people who helped found the town are buried there, according to Cedar Rapids television station KCRG (https://bit.ly/1qP9Phj ). Among the damaged gravestones are ones placed on graves of Oelwein family members.

City Council member Peg Sherrets said a restoration company will survey the damage on Friday.
