SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - The University of Utah is announcing a new scholarship for students who are members of the Ute Indian Tribe.

The university says in a statement the fund is part of a new agreement in which the tribe affirmed its support for the school’s Ute team name.

University officials say a lack of money is a significant barrier to a degree for many American Indian students. This is the first scholarship fund specifically for members of the Ute tribe.

A five-member committee including two tribe members will award the $8,000-a-year scholarships based on grades, leadership skills and community service as well as tribal affiliation.

It will be paid for with merchandise sales and donor funding.
