HONOLULU (AP) - President Barack Obama has ordered federal aid to help with recovery efforts in Hawaii neighborhoods affected by Tropical Storm Iselle.

Obama on Friday declared a major disaster area in those parts of Hawaii.

Federal funding will be available for emergency work and for repair or replacement of public facilities damaged by the storm on the Big Island and on Maui. The funds also can be used for hazard mitigation efforts statewide.

A disaster declaration for individual assistance was rejected last month. Gov. Neil Abercrombie in a statement says the state and Hawaii County are gathering information to appeal that decision.

Abercrombie says he’s working with Hawaii County as it prepares for another possible disaster due to the lava flow that may damage homes in the Puna district.
