LAWTON, Okla. (AP) - An Oklahoma man who slashed his girlfriend’s throat and barricaded her in a closet has been sentenced to 25 years in prison.

Thirty-four-year-old Elliot Gaines pleaded guilty this week to assault with a dangerous weapon, kidnapping and vehicle larceny. The victim survived the attack.

Prosecutors say he went to her house in February and sliced her with a box cutter after she refused to loan him money. They say he left her to die in a closet with furniture stacked outside.

He stole her car and was found two days later by U.S. Marshals at a local motel.
