DETROIT (AP) - A shooting inside a west side Detroit home left one man dead early Friday and led to the death of a woman who was in a car that wrecked following the gunfire, police said.

Four other people were wounded in the shooting sometime after midnight. Some who were at the house had attended a vigil Thursday evening at another location.

“There was some consumption of intoxicants,” Police Chief James Craig told reporters Friday. “There was an argument and from that argument a shooting. It appears everyone involved in the incident was acquainted.”

Some vehicles sped away after the shooting, sparking a chase with officers, police said. One of the fleeing cars struck a fire hydrant a few blocks away, killing the woman and critically injuring another person.

Craig said it’s not clear why the vigil was held the night before. He said officers were told it might have been for the victim of an earlier traffic accident or shooting.

“There was no retaliation that we know of,” Craig said when asked if the argument that led to the shooting stemmed from the vigil. “We’re still trying to piece this together. A lot of things are still absolutely not clear. We’ve gotten very little cooperation from the people involved.”

The conditions of the four other gunshot victims were not immediately known.

Craig said officers were already in the area when the shooting occurred and arrived at the house shortly after 911 calls about the gunfire were made.

Two people were arrested on gun charges after one gun was found in the wrecked car and another in a vehicle that officers stopped later. A gun also was found in the house, Craig said.

Five other people were arrested following a fight at one of the hospitals where some shooting victims were taken, police said.
