INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Health officials say a severe respiratory illness that has sickened hundreds of children has reached Indiana.

The Indiana State Department of Health said Friday that four Lake County children have been confirmed as having had enterovirus, a virus similar to the germ that causes the common cold. The virus can be severe and require hospitalization in people with underlying medical conditions such as asthma.

The children were treated at University of Chicago Hospital and have since been discharged.

The health department also says Indiana hospitals statewide are reporting an increase in the number of patients with respiratory illnesses, especially among children.

Enteroviruses are common, with 10 million to 15 million cases in the U.S. annually. The current outbreak has also been reported in other states including Ohio, Illinois and Kentucky.
