LANSING, Mich. (AP) - Gov. Rick Snyder has ordered flags to be lowered on Monday in honor of a Kalkaska County fire official killed in the line of duty.

According to a statement Friday from the governor’s office, Coldsprings-Excelsior Assistant Fire Chief William Russell Wiita died Monday. The 47-year-old Kalkaska resident had been responding to an emergency call in Excelsior Township.

Snyder’s order calls for U.S. flags within the state capitol complex and on all state buildings to be lowered to half-staff on Monday.

The governor says “courageous first responders” such as Wiita “risk their lives daily to protect our communities and state.”

A celebration of Wiita’s life is planned for Saturday in Kalkaska.
