HONOLULU (AP) - The president of the Honolulu police officers’ union says an officer should not be punished because his gun discharged in the bathroom of a Target store.

Tenari Maafala tells KHON-TV (https://bit.ly/1uz8NaW) the shooting was an accident and no crime was committed.

The officer’s gun fired Saturday night in the bathroom of the store in Salt Lake. No one was injured.

The police department is investigating to determine whether the officer should be disciplined. He remains on patrol duty.

Maafala says the officer made an honest mistake and the shooting was an unfortunate situation that happened to a good officer on the force for two years.

Maafala says there was no cover up and police officers need to make a full investigation before filing reports available to the public.
