RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Virginia’s veterans services commissioner is resigning.

Paul Galanti’s decision was announced Friday by Gov. Terry McAuliffe, who called him “a true American hero.”

Galanti is a former Navy pilot and prisoner of war. He was shot down in Vietnam and was imprisoned by the North Vietnamese for nearly seven years.

Galanti has served as the department’s commissioner since April 2010. His five-year appointment was nearing an end.

He will leave office on Oct. 8
