LARAMIE, Wyo. (AP) - Wildlife officials are encouraging hunters this fall to watch an online video aimed at helping them distinguish between male and female black bears.

Robin Kepple with the Wyoming Game and Fish Department says it’s often difficult to tell the gender of a black bear, and when the female quota is reached in a bear hunt area, the season closes for that area.

Tracks, differences in body size and shape, group size and certain behavioral characteristics provide evidence of sex. A large male bear can weigh between 200 pounds and 250 pounds, but they can grow to more than 300 pounds. Adult females are typically 130 pounds to 150 pounds.

Hunters are being asked to visit https://wgfd.wyo.gov/web2011/hunting-1001184.aspx to watch the video.
