PUXICO, Mo. (AP) - A southeast Missouri woman has received a ceremonial American flag honoring her husband - 43 years after his death.

The Poplar Bluff Daily American Republic (https://bit.ly/14xhyUm ) reports that Puxico resident Gladys Simpson was out for a family dinner recently when she got the surprise, an American flag honoring Walter Nelson Hobgood, her late husband.

Hobgood was a Navy veteran of World War II who died in 1971.

American flags are usually provided to drape the casket or accompany the urn of those who served in the military. The flag is then presented to next of kin. It isn’t clear why Simpson did not receive her husband’s flag 43 years ago.

Simpson’s son-in-law contacted organizations for veterans. The Missouri State Veterans Cemetery in Bloomfield donated a flag for Simpson.
