LIHUE, Hawaii (AP) - An 83-year-old Kapaa woman in a 2013 crash that killed a motorcycle driver has been sentenced to probation and ordered to pay $8,087.61 restitution for funeral expenses.

The Garden Island (https://bit.ly/1uzuho1) reports Charlotte Smith Kaui on Thursday also was granted her request for deferred acceptance of her no-contest plea.

She will be allowed to request that charges be removed from her criminal record if she completes probation terms.

Smith Kaui on June 2 pleaded no contest misdemeanor negligent homicide.

Prosecutors say Smith Kaui on July 20, 2013, made a left turn from Kuhio Highway and collided with 52-year-old motorcyclist Thomas Gregory Newsom.

She was first charged with negligent homicide and inattention to driving

County deputy attorney Melinda Mendes says the plea agreement recognized that the case was about simple negligence.
